In ‘Matsya Puran’ there is a detailed description about the origin of ‘Vaastu Purush’; it says that during a fierce battle between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasur, a few drops of Lord Shiva’s sweat fell on earth’s surface. One of these droplets emerged into a huge horrifying humanly creature. He was extremely hungry and wanted to eat all the three lokas. Scared and terrified, all the Devas appealed in front of Shri Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu asked them to dump the horrifying person’s face upside down and sit on each of his body part so that the Devas could become fearless. On being punished in such a manner he asked Shri Brahma Deva that how he could help the Devas. On realising the innocence of this new born person Shri Brahma Deva ordered him to remain dumped in the earth in the similar manner and blessed him with the name of ‘Vaastu Purush’. He also declared “From now onwards you will be worshiped necessarily on all auspicious occasions related to construction, the offerings of Yagna by the Yajmaan shall be your food”.
